Move early

Assistance programs are far more effective before a case reaches court. If you know rent will be short, start calling the week you know, not the week the notice arrives. Dialling 211 is the fastest way to find what is currently funded in your county, because availability changes month to month.

Utilities

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program helps with electricity bills and is administered locally. Florida utilities also offer payment arrangements and budget billing, and the medically vulnerable can register for additional protections — worth doing before hurricane season, not during it. Ask the utility directly what hardship programs it runs; many are not advertised.

If eviction has started

Florida's eviction timeline is short and unforgiving. Deadlines to respond are counted in days, and in most cases a tenant must deposit disputed rent with the court registry to keep the right to contest. Missing that step usually ends the case regardless of the merits. Florida's legal aid organisations handle eviction defence for families who qualify, and the state courts system publishes self-help forms. Do not wait to see what happens.

Shelter

Homeless services in Florida are coordinated regionally through a continuum of care, which is the entry point for shelter and rehousing. Families with children are usually prioritised.
