Child Care and Early Learning in Hernando County

Florida funds early learning through two main programs, and they work differently. Knowing which one you are asking about saves a lot of confusion.

This is an independent informational guide. It is not a government agency, a service provider, or a nonprofit, and it is not affiliated with any organization that previously used this domain. Program rules change — always confirm details with the official source before acting.

Voluntary Prekindergarten

VPK is free to every Florida four-year-old, regardless of household income. Eligibility is based on the child's date of birth, and families register through the regional early learning coalition that serves their county. Programs run during the school year or as a shorter summer option. Because popular providers fill early, families generally register well before the term starts.

School Readiness

School Readiness is the income-based subsidy that helps working parents pay for care for younger children. Eligibility depends on household income, family size, and an approved activity such as employment, training or study. Demand regularly exceeds funding, so counties keep waiting lists. Get on the list even if you are unsure you qualify; your place is based on when you applied.

Judging a provider

Florida licenses child care facilities and family child care homes, and inspection reports are public. Before enrolling, look up the provider's inspection history through the Department of Children and Families' child care search, and read what the violations actually were — a paperwork lapse is not the same as a supervision failure. Then visit. Watch how staff speak to children, ask about staff turnover, and ask what happens when a child is hurt or a parent is late.

Questions worth asking

  • What is the ratio of adults to children in my child's room, right now?
  • How long has the lead teacher been here?
  • What is the policy on illness, and on late pickup fees?
  • How do you communicate with parents during the day?
  • Are you accepting School Readiness or VPK funding this year?
