Food programs stack. A family can use several at once, and most people who qualify for one qualify for another.

SNAP

SNAP — still widely called food stamps — is administered in Florida through the Department of Children and Families' ACCESS system. Applications are online at myflfamilies.com. Benefits arrive on an EBT card usable at supermarkets, many smaller shops and some farmers' markets. Households with very little income may qualify for expedited processing, so say so on the application if that describes you.

WIC

WIC serves pregnant and postpartum women, infants and children under five. It provides specific foods, infant formula, breastfeeding support and nutrition counselling. Income limits are more generous than many families assume, and a household can receive both WIC and SNAP. WIC is run through the Florida Department of Health, which has an office in every county.

School meals

School breakfast and lunch programs continue through the district, and many Florida schools operate under provisions that let them serve all students at no charge. Districts also run summer meal sites when school is out. Ask the school office rather than assuming your family must apply.

Pantries and emergency food

Hernando County is served by a network of church and community pantries, and the regional food bank that supplies them maintains a current list of distribution sites and hours — that list is a better source than any static page, because sites and times change.
