Health Coverage for Children in Hernando County

Most uninsured children in Florida qualify for something. The difficulty is usually the application, not eligibility.

Florida KidCare

KidCare is the umbrella for the state's children's coverage: Medicaid for the lowest incomes, MediKids and Florida Healthy Kids for older children in households above that line, and the Children's Medical Services plan for children with serious or chronic conditions. Families above the subsidised thresholds can often buy in at full premium, which is still far cheaper than an individual policy. One application routes a child to whichever part fits. Apply through floridakidcare.org.

What you will be asked for

Proof of income for everyone in the household, proof of Florida residency, each child's date of birth, and immigration status details where relevant. Have last month's pay stubs ready. Self-employed parents should expect to supply a profit-and-loss summary or tax return.

If you are denied

Read the notice before doing anything else — it states the reason and the appeal deadline, which is short. A large share of denials are documentation problems rather than genuine ineligibility: a missing pay stub, a mismatched address, an unsigned page. Fixing and resubmitting is often faster than appealing. Where the denial looks substantively wrong, Florida's legal aid organisations advise on benefits appeals at no charge to families who qualify.

Care while you wait

Federally qualified health centres and county health department clinics see patients on a sliding fee scale regardless of coverage, and cannot turn a child away for inability to pay. Florida school districts run immunisation and screening events before each school year. For anything urgent, an emergency department must screen and stabilise a patient regardless of insurance status.
