Free and Low-Cost Legal Help for Families
Most family legal problems in Florida have a free or reduced-cost route, but each has its own gatekeeper.
This is an independent informational guide. It is not a government agency, a service provider, or a nonprofit, and it is not affiliated with any organization that previously used this domain. Program rules change — always confirm details with the official source before acting.
Legal aid
Regional legal aid organisations handle civil matters — evictions, benefits denials, family law, guardianship, domestic violence injunctions — for people under an income threshold. They do not take criminal cases and they cannot take every case that qualifies. Apply early; intake often closes when capacity is reached.
Statewide starting points
Florida has a statewide legal information site run by the legal services community, and The Florida Bar operates a lawyer referral service that provides a reduced-cost initial consultation. Both are better first calls than a general web search, which tends to surface out-of-state marketing.
Self-help through the courts
The Florida Supreme Court approves standard family law forms — for custody, support, name changes and more — and they are published free with instructions. Circuit courts run self-help centres that can tell you which form applies and whether it has been filed correctly. Court staff cannot give legal advice, but they can stop you filing the wrong document.
Domestic violence
Injunctions for protection are filed at the courthouse and there is no filing fee. Certified domestic violence centres provide advocates who help with the paperwork and can attend the hearing, and their services are confidential. The national domestic violence hotline operates around the clock for safety planning. If there is immediate danger, call 911 first.
Before any appointment
Write down what happened in date order on one page. Bring every document, even ones you think are irrelevant. Know your deadlines — in Florida, missing one usually matters more than the strength of your position.
